SATAN – an angel who rebelled

Satan was created as an angel.

Satan was created by God as angel, with a high position in heaven.
It is written of him:

Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you:   carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.   (Ezekiel 28:12-14)

The king of Tyre in this prophecy refers to Satan, who was created as an angel, a guardian cherub before the throne of God.

He looked splendid according to the above description. He was one of the principle angels in the third heaven, a guardian cherub over the throne of God.

It says in Isaiah 14:11-12:

your pomp has been brought down to the grave, along with the noise of your harps; … How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! …

This prophecy connects ‘your pomp’ with ‘ the noise of your harps’.
This suggests that Satan was responsible for worship in heaven.

Satan, a fallen angel.

This excellent angel became unfaithful to his calling however.

You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; …   (Ezekiel 28:15-17)

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God”   (Isaiah 14:12-14)

These statements are not ideas of Ezekiel and Isaiah; they are prophecies, given at God’s behest.

Satan became proud of his appearance and his position. In his pride he wanted to be like God.
As a result of all this Satan was banished from heaven and cast down to earth.
Since then he is the adversary of God and he is no longer active in the third heaven, but in the heavenly realms. His field of action is the earth.

The Book of Revelation says:

The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.   (Revelation 12:9)

Satan dragged a large number of angels down with him from heaven when he rebelled.
Revelation 12:4 states that Satan, presented as a dragon, dragged a third of the stars down with his tail and flung them to the earth.
It is generally accepted that this passage describes Satan’s banishment from heaven, when he dragged a third of the angels down with him when he rebelled.
